Walk down Castro Street this week and the block is doing what it does every September: patio heaters coming out of storage, banner poles going up outside the Chamber of Commerce office, servers at Ludwig's Biergarten already fielding calls about reservations for the weekend of September 12 and 13. The Mountain View Art & Wine Festival returns for its 54th year, and if you've lived here more than one summer, you know the drill. One storefront on Castro Street had gone dark by November 2025, just six months after it opened with real buzz and real backers.
Castro Street has both restaurant openings and closures, and that turnover can be useful context if you're deciding where to spend a Friday night before the crowds arrive.
A New Restaurant Opening
In July 2025, a sous chef named Hikmat Babayev got a call from a friend, Elshan Musayev, asking if he wanted to open a food truck. Babayev was working at Meyhouse at the time and wasn't sold on the idea. Musayev kept pushing. By July they'd launched Olivia Bros, a Mediterranean food truck parked in the lot of a shuttered Chinese restaurant on El Camino Real that had closed that same June. The owner of that space liked what he saw and eventually handed the whole building over to Babayev's group.
Four months after the food truck started, on November 8, 2025, that same team opened NAR Restaurant, the Peninsula's first restaurant dedicated to South Caucasus cuisine, according to a Mountain View Voice report from that week. Chef Teymur Piriyev runs the kitchen, turning out piti, a slow-cooked lamb stew served in a clay pot, and shah plov, rice baked inside a crust of lavash bread. The 85-seat dining room centers on a hand-painted mural of a pomegranate tree, since nar is the word for pomegranate in the region and a symbol of good fortune. Within two weeks of opening the sit-down room, the same team launched three ghost-kitchen concepts out of the same address, betting that one kitchen could run four different menus at once.
That's an aggressive amount of risk for a team that had never run a full restaurant before. It worked.
A Restaurant Closure
A few blocks away, Gianni Chiloiro and Angelo Sannino run Doppio Zero. Their Neapolitan pizza spot has been on Castro for years and still fills its sidewalk tables faster than almost anywhere else downtown. When the pedestrian closure took hold, they opened a Spanish tapas room two doors down called Vida. They later converted the space into Johnny & Sanny's, an Italian-American room named for themselves, serving pasta carbonara and Roman-style pizza. It opened in May 2025.
By the time NAR was hanging its pomegranate mural in November, Johnny & Sanny's had permanently closed, according to Palo Alto Online's Peninsula Foodist newsletter, which noted the closure came after just six months in downtown Mountain View. Doppio Zero, another restaurant from the same founders, remains on Castro Street.
Long-Running Restaurants on Castro Street
For a familiar meal, Doppio Zero and Ludwig's Biergarten are long-running choices on this stretch of Castro Street. Doppio Zero's pizza program predates both Vida and Johnny & Sanny's. Ludwig's Biergarten has functioned as the block's public square for years now, long communal tables, soft pretzels, a patio big enough that a Tuesday night can feel like a weekend crowd.

Festival Weekend on Castro Street
The Mountain View Art & Wine Festival closes roughly a mile of Castro Street to cars for two days, turning the whole corridor into what SFGATE's Story Studio recently called a "mile-long party." More than 400 artists and craft-makers set up booths from El Camino Real to Evelyn Avenue. Two stages run music all weekend. This year's addition is a ticketed Wine Tasting Experience featuring pours from wineries including Frey Vineyards, Moshin Vineyards, and Duncan Peak Wines, according to the festival's official site. Saturday runs 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission to the festival itself is free.
For restaurants along the closed-off blocks, festival weekend brings visitors to Castro Street. It offers a chance to explore both long-running spots and newer concepts.
If you're deciding where to eat during the festival itself, consider what kind of meal you want. NAR is close enough to the pedestrian mall to walk to before or after browsing the art booths, and its combination lunch menu means you can grab something fast between the Kids Funzone and the wine lounge without committing to a full sit-down meal. Doppio Zero will be busy regardless of the festival, so plan around it rather than against it. And if you want a beer and a place to sit, Ludwig's patio offers both.
What This Actually Tells You About Living Here
Restaurant openings and closures are one part of life along this half-mile of Mountain View. NAR followed a food-truck venture, while Johnny & Sanny's closed after six months; these examples show that an established restaurant's success does not guarantee success for every new concept. Festival weekend brings visitors to Castro Street, but one weekend does not determine which businesses will remain open a year later.
